TALKING WITH JESUS
Read Matthew 6:1-18
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Matthew 6:7 (NKJV)
Talking to one of my former schoolmates this week, we reminisced on the good old college days. I reminded her of a line she would use when she was praying. “Lord, you said the cattle on a thousand hills belong to you. Can you please sell one of the cows and give me the money?” We have been laughing about this for years each time we get a chance to talk.
What amazed me at the time was the nature of her prayer. It was as though she was talking to a friend. Still, today, I sometimes find so much humor in our prayers. It is a humble feeling when we can speak to God as we do to a friend. It has such profound and richer meaning. We all communicate with God based on our knowledge and relationship with Him. We know that He hears us. “Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. (Jeremiah 29:12).
There are still people who need to learn how to pray. They are timid about what they should say and how to approach God. You can start by seeing Him as a loving friend that cares about you. The Holy Spirit is also our aid. “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). Jesus also left us a model prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) that is a great place to start.

Prayer: Dear God, we sometimes come before You, not knowing what to say. May we see you as the kind caring father you are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
