SHACKLED IN CHAINS

SHACKLED IN CHAINS

Read Acts 16:16-40

Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so the foundations of the prison were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were loosed.

Acts 16:26 (NKJV)

Paul and Silas were accused of causing trouble (freeing a girl from an evil spirit) and whipped (Verse 18-24). Not only that, but this good deed resulted in them being imprisoned. Surprisingly, while in prison, they did not murmur or complain about how wrongly they have been treated, as I believe I would have. Instead, they sang hymns and prayed (Verse 25). They worshipped openly, as all the prisoners could hear their anthems of praise.

God responded to their faith by causing a great earthquake, loosing their bonds, and opening the doors. Not only theirs but all those who were in prison. The guard thought the prisoners had escaped and sought to take his life (Verse 26-27). “But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, Do yourself no harm, for we are all here” (Verse 28). Amazed at this miracle, the guard inquired how he could be saved. That very night he and his family accepted Christ and were baptized. The next day they were released by the city leaders.

Many times we hear about prisoners escaping prison. Although they had the opportunity, neither Paul, Silas, nor any prisoners tried to escape. All the prisoners bore witness to how good and great God is. Today, let us remember those who are in prison. May even prisoners come to see the moving of God in their various situations. We serve a God that looks after us. Like Paul and Silas, when we know that God is with us, no matter where we are, we can glorify Him.
