LIBERTY THROUGH CHRIST
Read Romans 6:1-23
But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
Romans 6:22 (NKJV)
It was a cold winter day below 50 °F. I noticed a homeless guy sitting in our restaurant’s corner seat as soon as our doors were open, so I went over and started talking to him. As I spoke to him, I discovered that he had slept under a bridge the night before without a blanket but just a sweater and windbreaker. When I asked why he didn’t take advantage of the local homeless shelters, he stated he would lose the freedom to smoke a cigarette. He would neither be able to go on the streets every day.
Sin cripples us and makes us believe we are enslaved people, bound to or by our circumstances. Addiction can be challenging to break. It takes tremendous time, effort, and commitment. Christ said the world would bring hardship, but He overcame the world (John 16:33), and where His Spirit abides, there is Liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17). When we desire Christ in us, our bodies become the dwelling place of the Spirit (1 Corinthian 6:19, 20).
Today, we have the assurance that we are not alone in our struggles. “For with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27), and God “gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15: 57). If you are struggling to break a bad habit, know that God is on your side and “If God is for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31).
Prayer Focus: Bad habits, addiction, relapse, back sliding
