JESUS, OUR BEST FRIEND
Read Proverbs 18:1-24
A man of companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24 (ESV)
Many of us say we had a best friend at some point. We wanted to spend every moment in that person’s company, especially as kids. This friend may also be one in whom we confide. Jesus, here in the passage, explores our need for human friendships. We trust our friends; however, they are sometimes loyal or give the best advice. Do not be deceived “Bad company corrupts good morals” (1 Corinthian 15: 33). Regardless, we are here to express brotherly love toward each other.
Jesus desires to be by us every step of the way. “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you” (John 15:15). He has given us so many promises and made known to us what He is doing in Heaven. He longs to be close to us each day.
We can have that closer walk with Jesus through prayer and the study of His word. “Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend. Not that it is necessary in order to make known to God what we are, but in order to enable us to receive Him. Prayer does not bring God down to us, but brings us up to Him” (E.G., White, Steps To Christ, 1898, Pg.53). By this, we will be able to hear His voice and follow His lead in our lives. Finally, let us today seek to be in the company of Jesus. As we go forward, may we create Christ Centered friendships with our neighbors and commune with Jesus, our closest friend.
Prayer Focus: Lonely Hearts
Prayer: Holy Father, you are our Saviour and, most of all, our Friend. May we walk with you daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
